Axiology & Ethics (introduction)
Christianity is more than merely the sum of its ethical teachings, but it certainly is not less. Central to Christian faith is our faith in God's existence and our response and commitment to Him. Historical Christian theology holds that there are three Persons in our Trinitarian conception of God--Father, Son and Holy Spirit--sharing one essence or being. God's eternal and perfect moral nature is the moral grounding for human morality, human values and ethics.
It follows from this understanding of moral ontology that moral commands given by Him for human beings also play a crucial role in specifiying Christian values and ethical life. It raises questions, among others, like: how is all this to be practially understood and lived? Should a serious Christian only read the Bible for moral input and reject out of hand the alleged insights thought to have emeged from the academic disciplines of axiology and ethics? Has God revealed moral laws to humans apart from special revelation and if so, to what extent?
